A little of this, a little of that!

Over the past couple of weeks the children have been

learning about the three states of matter: solid, liquid and

gas.  In this unit we conducted several experiments.  For

liquid, we had an experiment with different types of liquid

such as corn syrup, water, rubbing alcohol and vegetable

oil.  We added food coloring to each individual liquid and

what we discovered was that liquids can have different

weights.  Also, to learn about gases we put vinegar in a

water bottle and baking soda in a balloon, here is our

result....

When we finished our unit we then sorted pictures of

objects into the appropriate state of matter and displayed

it on our science board.

Throughout the year we have been discussing elements of a

story.  In the beginning I took the lead on the discussion of

plot, setting, characters etc. in our group lessons after

reading a story.  Now that the children fully understand

what these concepts mean I have given them more

independence in talking with each other about these things

and not having me as the director.  To help build these

skills of retelling stories and reflecting on story elements

we have used these sticks...
Story pieces are laminated and put on to paint stirrer with

velcro so children can manipulate.  From

www.firstgradewow.blogspot.com  (want to give credit

where credit is due! :) )

These allow the children to physically engage with the story

elements as well as discuss with a partner.  Each person

may have a different insight or remember something the

other person did not.

For non-fiction reading, we learned facts and information

about penguins.  As a class we read a factual book about

penguins and then completed a chart using our "schema"

(what we already knew) and what we learned after reading

the book.  Then we saw what were misconceptions we had

about penguins.  I got this idea from a well known teacher,

Deanna Jump (I want to be her someday!!)

 See you next week!!

Sneezy the Snowman!

This week we had snowman theme centers!  Our

centers included sight word writing, beginning sound

recognition, alphabet writing, journaling, sentence

formation and syllables.  Here are some pictures of

these centers in action...

Also, we read Sneezy the Snowman.  For all my

teacher friends, I had found this on Deanna Jump's

blog and she raved about how adorable it is...she

was right, it's a super cute story.  After we read the

story we talked about the important events and the

result of everything Sneezy had done.

This is also a picture of our hallway bulletin board.  It

displays the very beautiful work of my little kiddos....

so proud am I!!!

We also compared to versions of The Mitten to each

other using a Venn Diagram.

That's all for now!

Happy New Year!

Welcome back!  I hope everyone felt as well

rested and ready for school as I did this

Monday!  I thoroughly enjoyed my vacation but

am feeling ready to get back to the routine!  As

I had mentioned all the way back in September,

once January hits the children are just soaring

in their reading!!  Homework has begun and

they are beginning to be little readers!

Here are some pictures of our morning math

centers this week.  Our current unit is on

measurement which allowed us to use various

objects throughout the week to practice

measuring.  Our previous unit was patterning

so to review we had a patterning center with

Unifix cubes.  We are also counting by 10's.

During our literacy centers we had winter

themed activities!  These involved changing

vowels in words to match the picture,

consonant blends, real and nonsense word

sorts, rhyme matching, silent reading, and

journaling.

Our reading focus this week animal fantasy and

plot.  We read The Mitten by Jan Brett which

also allowed us to sequence the events.  We

used two versions of The Snowy day by Anna

Milbourne and Ezra Jack Keats to compare and

contrast texts.

We had a wonderful week!  Looking forward to

our snowman theme next week!!
